Dumfries Women’s Signwriting Squad

2018 – Ongoing
Signwriting Collective based in Dumfries

After several years of sporadic lettering and painting projects, a small group of women sign writer’s got together with the support of The Oven’s Creative Producer, Kevin Reid and Glasgow based sign writer Rachel Miller. We host regular meet up’s to share skills, projects and to practice together, and also work collaboratively on client based commissions. In 2021 our client work included an ice-cream van for Sweet Sadies (Dumfries), shop facade signage for Lisa Rothwell Young (Langholm) and Gallovidia Books (Kirkcudbright), and The Midsteeple Quarter. More recently, the DWSS’ projects include murals, large scale typography and exhibition texts for museum contexts, amongst other bits and pieces. For more information about commissioned lettering work, please get in touch by email.

The DWSS monthly meet up currently takes place once a month at The Stove Network. Find details about our next event over on the Stove’s events listings here

I have been leading the group the past couple of years alongside talented painter Louise Todd, and numbers vary from one or two to a dozen or more. We always welcome new painters to the group, for details visit our instagram page or contact us directly.

Hi Alistair, nice to hear – there’s lots to be learned! Not that I’m aware of, though we do occasional open-to-anyone sessions (we’ve had two so far this year), best thing to do is keep an eye on The Stove website and DWSS instagram pages for upcoming events. I would also recommend if you can attending an intro course – there aren’t any run in the D&G area but there are some great ones in the central belt, and also some available online.

There’s one coming up with Bungo Sign Co in Glasgow (they run regular ones, so if the dates don’t suit get in touch with them direct) https://bungosignco.bigcartel.com/product/beginners-signwriting-workshop

Joby Carter hosts online courses and also in person ones near Maidenhead https://www.jobycarter.com/painting-courses/
